And I'm not saying that it is wrong- it is realistic because these things have to get paid for somehow- just that it was one other example supporting my belief that the hiloulah seemed to me to have a strong economic, as well as socio-religious component. Furthermore, I suppose I was further taken aback by these things in the Moroccan context after learning that Jewish Moroccans not only do not pay a yearly fee to be a member of a synagogue's congregation, but that they believe it is weird AND wrong that American Jews have to pay to attend synagogue.
